A fireplace in a finished basement is a sure way to make your space warm and inviting. A fireplace can be the focal point of the basement and add a modern, classic or rustic touch to the space. When it comes to fireplaces, just like any other design element, the choices are endless. The most popular options for a basement fireplace are direct vent gas or ventless electric.

Should I Install a Gas or Electric Fireplace?

If you want more ambiance, then you should consider a gas fireplace. If you’re looking for a safe way to heat your basement that isn’t a safety hazard for kids or pets, then look into an electric fireplace. Gas fireplaces do require additional technical services to install and connect a gas line, while electric fireplaces don’t require any additional ventilation.

Gas fireplaces will provide a little more ambiance than an electric unit. The fire is real and works like a gas oven, with the burner hidden by ceramic logs that spread the fire and make it look like a real wood fire. The downside is that gas fireplaces need at least 20″ of depth inside an exterior wall to ensure there’s enough room for the unit and for proper ventilation. Because they require a licensed gas technician to build a vent and connect the gas lines, gas fireplaces are also costlier up front.

Electric units are popular because they are easier to install and maintain than gas fireplaces. They are energy efficient and do not release any pollution into the air. They also do not require a gas line, vent, or extra depth. Some models work like a space heater but are much safer and have a nice, lifelike flame. They are safe for kids and pets and are cool to the touch because the heating element is tucked inside the unit, while a blower forces the warmed air out into the room. Electric fireplaces can be installed on interior walls of the basement as well as exterior as they do not require venting.

What about style?

Whether you are going with a classic or a modern look for your fireplace, the design choices are endless. Imitation wood logs, pebbles, river rocks and glass rocks can all be added to get that special look that works with your vision for the space.
The wall surrounding the fireplace can really enhance your basement. You can add a rustic wood mantle to display art work, hang a TV above the fireplace or cover the wall with stone, tile, mosaic, wood, marble or any other surface material.
